Excursion of the Harem by Jean-Léon Gérôme , French , 1824-1904

 Excursion of the Harem
Also known as Promenade du Harem
By  Jean-Léon Gérôme , French , 1824-1904
Oil on canvas , 86 x 150,5 cm

Since his first travel in Egypt between 1855 and 1856, Gérôme quickly became a witness of the Oriental lifestyle. The scenes he depicts are always subtly filled with poetry and incredible detailing. Gérôme was captivated with the Oriental light and atmosphere and he succeeded in leading the viewer in the oriental world

Excursion of the Harem is a fabulous example of this depiction. Gerome chose to represent this magical moment of the harem slowly floating along the Nile; the river that he particularly loved, its calm water and vaporous shores, the vastness of the sky and the sculptural reality. Gérôme chose to hide the women; however, they represent the main subject of his painting, fully present and wearing bright clothing

The painting depicts an elongated boat sailing calmly on the Nile river, in a subtle Egyptian landscape. While ten rowers are simultaneously paddling, the mysterious beauties of the harem are lightly unveiled
